A Perfect Day on Lake Garda – Between Cliffs, Lemons and Golden Light
Start Your Day – Heights and Heartbeats in Tremosine
The adventure begins high above the lake, climbing one of the most scenic and surreal roads I’ve ever driven: the Strada della Forra. It winds through a narrow gorge, cut into rock and shadow, until it opens to light — and to Tremosine.
From up here, the view is simply breathtaking. I stop at the Terrazza del Brivido, a platform suspended hundreds of meters above the water. You can see the lake stretch endlessly beneath your feet, and the feeling is somewhere between flying and dreaming.
With a deep breath and a quick coffee from a tiny bar nearby, I soak it all in. The wind, the silence, the height. And then I ride on, still buzzing.
For each stop of the day, I’d like to have a small info box at the end of the section where I can add practical notes — such as driving time to the next location, parking tips, or other useful info for visitors.
Midmorning Wandering – Citrus Paths in Limone
Descending back down toward the lake, I make my way to Limone sul Garda, a village where everything smells like lemon blossoms and old stones.
Tucked into the hillside is the Limonaia del Castèl, a terraced lemon grove that feels like a secret garden. Walking through it, I learn about the history of citrus farming here, how generations protected their lemons with walls and wooden covers through winter. The views between the leaves are incredible — lake, mountains, rooftops.
It’s a slow moment, full of sun and scent and quiet steps. One of those places you don’t want to leave too soon.
Lunch – Lakeside Traditions in Gargnano
My ride continues to Gargnano, a village that always feels like a hidden postcard.
Lunch is at a small restaurant facing the lake. I sit outside, shaded by vines, and order a plate of bigoli with sardines and lemon — an intense mix of earthy pasta and lake flavor. A glass of chilled white wine, some fresh bread, and that perfect pause where time stretches out.
Afterward, I wander through the old port, peek into local shops, and stumble upon a small artisan cheese shop filled with aged wheels and stories.
Before leaving, I spot two historic villas from the shoreline — Villa Feltrinelli and Villa Giulia — their elegance half-hidden behind cypress trees and silence.
Afternoon – Boats and Valleys
Later, I stop by Gargnano’s sailing club, where a few boats are out on the water. The lake is calm but full of motion, like a painting that breathes. I film a few clips, enjoy the breeze, and dream of coming back during the Centomiglia regatta — one of Italy’s most iconic lake races.
Then it’s time to head toward Toscolano Maderno, where I walk into the Valle delle Cartiere. It’s a gentle path through forest and ruins, where the sound of water and leaves creates a kind of soft rhythm. Old mills, mossy stones, little wooden bridges — it feels like a forgotten chapter of the lake’s story.
Golden Hour – Paper Made by Hand
In the valley stands a small Paper Museum, hidden in what used to be a working paper mill. Inside, I watch the delicate process of creating a sheet of handmade paper — water, pulp, patience. There’s something timeless about it, like watching a craft that has nothing to do with algorithms or screens.
The golden light filters through the windows. Everything feels warm and still.
Evening – Salò and a Soft Goodbye
As the day fades, I find myself in Salò. I stroll past two historic shops — one that smells of old tools and memories, the other of olive oil, herbs, and carefully folded linen.
Then, just as the light turns copper and the air cools slightly, I walk along the lakeside promenade, letting the water carry away the last thoughts of the day.
I stop at Mokai Beach for an aperitivo — a spritz, a handful of olives, and that kind of quiet that only comes after a full, beautiful day.
